Chapter 3

April 22nd, Present Day

Mt. Shasta, California

Bryanna signed the last of the papers her lawyer had drawn up and slid them across the table. “What’s next?”

Gavin Davis removed his glasses and tossed them on top of the stack of folders. “I’ll file these with the court and Travis will be served with the papers within the next couple weeks. The two of you signed a prenup so he doesn’t have any claim whatsoever on your inheritance, but he can go after your boutique.”

“No he can’t. My name’s not on any of the paperwork. As far as anyone else’s concerned, I’m just the store manager and take care of things for the owner who wishes to remain anonymous.”

He smiled. “Your parents taught you well. Always look out for yourself and assume the worst about everyone else. That way you’ll never be caught with your pants down.”

She laughed. “Gran was the same way. No one in the family knew the fortune she squirreled away until the day we were called in for the reading of her will. I’ll never forget the look on the faces of the rest of the family. She cut them all out and gave every single penny to me.”

“As long as you used the money to make all your dreams come true.”

She nodded. “I thought I found my perfect match in Travis. I’m not sure where or when it all went wrong. All I know is I’ve never been as miserable as I am now. If Gran were alive today, she’d kick my ass for sure.”

“Well, I’m sure she’d be very proud of you for sticking up for yourself. No one deserves to be treated as a possession. I promise to do everything I can to move things along. Once he’s served, the ball’s in his court. He has thirty days to answer your petition. If he doesn’t contest it, your divorce will be final six months after we file.”

She stood up from her chair and shook his hand. “Thank you for all your help, Gavin. I don’t know what I’d do without you and your legal team.”

“Leave it all up to us. If your husband knows what’s good for him, he’ll step out of your life without so much as a peep.”

“Fat chance of that happening. He doesn’t handle losing very well.”

“Neither do I.”
